The proposed development, a 13 story mixed-use building, received in June city site-plan approval. The plans include reuse of the historic building located at the corner of Central Ave. & Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. St., a building that had originally been proposed for demolition. The historic building will have retail on its ground floor with apartments above. In return for the city including as a special condition of approval that any change regarding reuse of the historic building will require the development project to be further reviewed, the Edge District withdrew its landmark application for the building. The outcome in this case shows the importance of public dialogue as part of the development review process and how reuse of historic buildings can be a successful part of new development.
